Shopping for fabrics is one of my favorite things. Each time I enter a fabric shop it's like going into a candy shop and I can't wait to see it all, touch it and then hoard it :D I mean create something with it! Sometimes a fabric is so pretty that I'm afraid to ruin it and then I end up keeping it for several weeks/months. But beautiful fabrics are made for sewing so let's make something beautiful with it!
Last year I was in New York for 2 months total and fell in love with Harlem. Why? Because it feels like Africa and you'll find so many beautiful african print fabric shops there. Plus the shop owners are so friendly. Always helpful, welcome their customers with a smile and when you go often they become your friend. I bought all the beautiful african print fabrics I used in my recent DIY african print tutorials there.
And the dashiki fabrics! I bought a pink and yellow one at Kaarta Fabrics on 125th street in Harlem. Baba and Salif who work there now are my family in New York :D Baba even said that he's my daddy in New York. They were so kind and lovely and it really felt like home in their shop. And I would love to work there! Imagine working a fabric shop on the coolest street in Harlem? That would be amazing because every day I would be surrounded by beautiful fabrics :D
If you don't have access to african print or dashiki fabrics, don't worry because I got you covered! I discovered this amazing fabric shop on Etsy that sells gorgeous dashiki and african textiles online. They ship worldwide and the prices start at $8 a yard.
